Serious Times

Psalm 86:7

How many of us have found ourselves in serious situations in life? What are we to do when we don’t know what to do? Often times we make wrong decisions during these moments. We must learn to trust the Lord for answers and guidance during these trying times. We are called on every week to intervene on behalf of people we love who are engulfed in serious issues.

1                    Problems

Everyone has problems in life in some form or fashion. We often discover that many of our friends are dealing with the same type issues we are dealing with as well. I never cease to be amazed in the ministry at the overwhelming issues people are dealing with on a continual basis. Some of the things that are helpful during these trying times are to identify the problems, be honest about the issues, and begin the discovery process of what can be done to make things better in your life. We are not to panic and run, we are not to deny that we have a problem, and we are not to sit around and do nothing about our problems. Many of us try sticking our heads in the sand hoping the problem will solve itself or simply go away. We must calm down, sit down, and evaluate what we are facing and what might be some possible solutions to our issues.

How do you respond when you know you have an issue to deal with?

How could you help and encourage others who are facing the giants in their lives?

2                    Possibilities

The Bible says, “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13) I encourage people with serious issues to be open to support from other people who have experienced what they are going through in life. There is also a time when a counselor may be needed to help you through your issues. There may be classes offered dealing with the subject that is the root of your problems. Look to the Word of God for guidance and directions. Surround yourself with Christian friends who can pray for you and encourage you. Spend some time studying the underlying factors of the issues you are facing. Explore all possible options to better understand your problem and seek solutions that you may not be aware of yet.

How has God helped you deal with serious issues in your life?

3                    Prayer

There are some issues we cannot solve on our own. The Psalmist wrote, “In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you answer me.” (Psalm 86:7) The Word also tells us, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1) Sometimes our prayers are simply cries for help meant for God’s ears only. When you appear to be out of options, your faith develops and emergencies become opportunities to experience God’s grace and power in a greater way. Tell the Lord exactly where you are and how you feel, ask God to fill you with his presence, flood your soul with encouragement, and remind you that with God all things are possible to those who believe. Remember our Lord is the God who created all things from nothing, and rolled back the Red Sea so His children, Israel, could cross over safely. He made the blind to see, the lame to walk, and the deaf to hear. God is always ready to hear from and help His children. A lady saw a tornado cross the road in front of her car and destroy a house beside the road. Running over to what was left of the house she saw a man hunkered down in a hole in the ground with his eyes closed. Are you okay, she asked? Is there anybody down there with you? No he replied just me and God having a serious conversation! Maybe it is time in your life to have a serious conversation with God!
