What is God Like

Acts 4 : 1 - 13

January 15, 2017

One day as Peter and John were going to the temple to pray a crippled man was begging for their attention and an offering. Peter told the lame man to look at them and then he said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk. Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.” (Acts 3: 6-8) The people were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. Word spread quickly and by the next day Peter and John were arrested and would have to explain what happened to the rulers, elders, and teachers of the law. They were going to be lectured by Peter and John on what God is like and the miraculous activities of God in real life!

1                    Faulty

Like many today the religious leaders had a faulty concept of God. They believed they had the market cornered on the actions of God. If anyone were going to experience God, they would have to come through the proper channels to do so. Many people are turned off to church because of this faulty idea that God cannot do anything outside the parameters of the religious control center of so-called religious community. I learned a long time ago that no one can control or limit the actions and activities of God. Many live under the false assumption that if you are going to experience God, you have to do it their way. How many people do we know that will not have anything to do with church because of this faulty arrogant attitude of some controlling church going people? This does not negate the need for Biblical truth and principles but rather deals with man’s sometime faulty concept of authority.

Who is in control in life?

Who is in control of God’s body called the church?

For those who may not know the answer if God!

Do not be faulty in this matter!

2                    Foggy

There are others, who are a little foggy in this matter of what God is like. Richard Halverson shared a message in a Men’s Devotional Bible that a little girl said to her minister, “I want a God with a face on.” She was expressing a childlike, nevertheless profound, desire for reality in religion. She was not satisfied with some nebulous, ethereal abstraction for God. She wanted something definite, tangible. She wanted a someone for a God and not a something. Perhaps that is why men do not take God more seriously. They hold a theory about God: Their notion of God is foggy, hazy, remote, and an idea that is beyond them with no connection with the everyday. A man wants a God with a face on! He asked men the question, “Who is the God you worship?” “Tell me about him. What is he like? Where does he dwell? Is he real to you?” Again and again, they stop after a few confused mutterings and admit God is quite unreal. When pinned down they have little to say. Why should a man bother about God if that is all he means to him?

Do you have a clear understanding of who God is?

Do not be foggy!

3                    Focused

Let’s talk about Jesus! “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4: 12-13) Jesus Christ is God in focus! In Him, we see God clearly, distinctly, sharply, and down to earth! If you want to know what God is like, look at His Son. If you want to hear God, listen to His Son! A man will make no mistake following Christ! Let a man begin with Jesus wherever he must be honest with himself; let him investigate Jesus all the way. Let him go along with Jesus as far as truth dictates and as far as honest inquiry leads. He will begin to realize that Jesus is God in focus. You cannot go wrong trusting Christ, following Christ, worshiping Christ! He will lead you to a personal, dynamic experience of God and you will know what God is like!

Be focused!
