Requirements For Receiving 1 Peter 5: 5-7
Peter teaches us that we are to humble ourselves before the Lord and trust Him with all of our cares because he truly cares for us. Do you find it difficult to be humble? It appears that the world we live in does not allow us to become comfortable with Christ-like humility. Most of you are living life in the fast lane and pressing the petal to the metal more and more each day. If we are willing to relax and be humble, it seems that we tend to lose the ground that we fought so hard to gain in a hectic world. How can we put ourselves into a position to receive the treasures we seek from the Lord?
What do you do when your day begins with problems? You turn on the shower but no hot water comes. In frustration, you call the plumber but you never get an answer, only a voice mail. Now you are already late for work and it looks like you are going to have to settle for an Eskimo type shower. (COLD) You finally make it to your car only to discover the battery is dead. Now you are frustrated, you have reached your breaking point, and your anger is justified, isn’t it? After all, you deserve your way, don’t you? Now you need a solution to your problems and you need it right now. Does this scenario seem to fit many of the people you know? This could be where relationships begin to break down.
How often do you reach your breaking point?
How do you respond when you are frustrated?
2 Furious and Fast-paced
In our fast-paced world, we have become accustomed to receiving messages, money, packages, and answers almost instantaneously. This may be why it is difficult for so many Christians to wait upon the Lord. When we lift our prayers to Him, we oftentimes treat God like the repairman, who should always be ready and waiting to fix our problems at a moment’s notice or before. Surely, the repairman has nothing else to do but wait on you, after all, you are the most important person in the world, and nobody else counts but you. If only everyone understood how furious and fast-paced your lifestyle is, surely they would make a monument to honor your unique greatness. Could it be that your lifestyle is out of balance and out of step with God?
Are you stuck in the fast lane?
How do you slow down and smell the burning rubber behind you?
Why not add some more things to your schedule and buy yourself a “Superman” t-shirt?
Though God is always with us through the presence of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16), He answers our prayers and responds to our needs in a time frame determined by His Divine will and plan for our lives. “Humble yourselves, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you.” (Vs 6&7) Why does he do things in His time and not always in ours? It is not to make our lives more difficult. Instead, it is to encourage us to trust Him more and rely upon Him completely. God is faithful to answer our prayers, but His answers come when we are truly ready to receive them. When you feel anxious about unanswered prayer, don’t give up, or become angry. Rather, seek God more with a patient heart, and trust His timing. I shared Monday night with a young man at Home of Grace who said he remembered me from years ago. I asked him if he had been here before and he said yes, this is my fifth time to go through the Home of Grace. He told me he was spoiled and smiled as he shared that he came before because his mom and dad wanted him to get his life right with God. He told me he came this time on his own because he is ready and willing to receive what God has to say in His life. I ask you to join others and me as we pray for this young man to truly receive what God has in store for his life and that God will strengthen his faith. Remember, all things are possible for those who believe!
