Luke 12:22 - 34
What is important to you in life? What do you spend most of your time thinking about in life? The world would have us believe that material things, wealth, money, social status, and prestige are the most important things in life. Everything we do in life requires a decision. Some say that even when we refuse to make a decision, we have decided what we will and will not do. The same is true when it comes to experiencing God’s best for our lives.
Necessities are things that are required to function in life. They are almost impossible to live without in life. Some necessities are food, water, air, health, shelter, clothes, medicine, and currency to buy, barter, and trade. There are many things we need in life. I try to encourage people when they are going through difficult times to focus on the bare necessities in life such as a roof over their head, food to eat, a bed to sleep in, and enough resources to pay your bills. Life sometimes can be hard. Our scripture today teaches us that God cares for the birds of the air and the lilies of the field and He cares for your wellbeing as well. The world is always telling us we do not have enough and that to attain happiness we need more and more and more and more. It is very important to have the necessities in life.
Can you remember a time when you struggled to make ends meet?
Many are in that struggle today and we need to assure them that God loves them as well as roll up our sleeves and try to help.
Who has helped you and who can you help this week. This is important!
Jesus taught us that it was God’s good pleasure to give us the kingdom of God. (v32) This means that all we could ever hope or want is ours to enjoy. Of course, there are guidelines for us to follow. God will never give us things simply to gratify our selfishness and greed. On the other hand, there are many Christians living in “Spiritual” poverty because they have never learned to enjoy the goodness of God’s blessings. This in no way solely focuses on financial wealth, though God may choose to bless you in this area. We should never feel guilty when God blesses us, but rather we should feel thankful. God’s blessings are not limited to one category in life. They are endless, and it is our privilege and responsibility to enjoy them when they come. What was the value of the beauty of the “Super moon” on Monday night? What is the value of a smile or laughter from someone you deeply love? What is the value of a word of encouragement to someone who is discouraged? We are privileged to participate in important things in life. Do not live beneath your privileges.
How many opportunities or blessings do you miss each week?
Therefore, instead of denying or ignoring the gifts God sends your way, ask the Lord to help you correctly handle them so that He will be glorified through your blessings in life. Jesus taught us that God gives good things to His children. Therefore, never refuse His gifts and blessings when they come, but treasure them and become a good steward (manager) of the most important things of God. We are all stewards of God’s blessings, the question is, are we good stewards or not good stewards. God tells us to seek first the kingdom of God and all the other important things of life will be given to us as well. He tells us as he gives us His kingdom to, “Sell your possessions and give to the poor. (“Wow moment”) Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Vs 33-34)
May the Lord help us to treasure the most important thing in life, “Him,” and the next most important thing is life, our loved ones, and the next most important thing in life, people, and then enjoy the additional blessings, privileges, and treasures He throws in for flavor for the abundant life!
